The first sociological survey to assess the socio-economic impact of the LIFE Safe Grid for Burgas project has started. The project is being implemented by the electricity distribution company in Southeast Bulgaria - Elektrorazpredelenie Yug (part of EVN) in partnership with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB). The survey is on the topic Conservation of endangered bird species by securing overhead power lines near Burgas lakes under the Life20 Nat/Bg/001234 - Life Safe Grid for Burgas project, and will be carried out by Ideas Bulgaria and NASOCA.

Fieldwork is planned for April 2022. The survey will be conducted among the adult population of the target areas around Burgas lakes and Burgas. In order to provide in-depth, reliable, and representative empirical information, the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods for data collection and data entry is envisaged. For the qualitative method a sample of 400 people will be used, and three focus groups - for the quantitative method.

The final second survey is planned for March-April 2026, at the end of the project. The LIFE Safe Grid for Burgas project is funded under the European Union LIFE programme. The project will be conducted in the wetlands around Burgas, namely Atanasovsko Lake, Burgas Lake (Vaya), Mandra-Poda Complex, and Pomorie Lake, which are located on one of the two main migratory routes of birds in Europe - Via Pontica and are part of NATURA 2000 network in Bulgaria. The LIFE Safe Grid for Burgas project will significantly contribute to the conservation of bird species at the national and European levels.
