On 1 April, we celebrate the International Bird Day, designated by the United Nations by the Convention for the protection of rare birds, which entered into force on 6 December 1906. This is one of the oldest dates in the international ecological calendar, through which people state their responsibility and commitment in the protection and conservation of wildlife.
Birds are the best indicator of the state of the environment in which we live and of which we are an integral part, because of their specific role in ecosystems, they signal to us the changes in the environment that have occurred. Their populations respond rapidly to pollution, desertification and deforestation. By tracking the condition of the birds around us, we can judge the quality of the environment we live in.
Bulgaria is one of the countries with the richest ornithological diversity in Europe, over 70% of all birds found in Europe can be seen in Bulgaria – 409 bird species, 26 of which have the status of World threatened species. 36 species of birds of prey can be observed in Bulgaria from a total of 38 species inhabiting the whole of Europe.
Elektrorazpredelenie Yug (EP Yug) is actively involved in the protection of the Bulgarian ornithofauna, working on one of the biggest projects for the protection of birds on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast - “LIFE Safe Grid for Burgas”. The project is realized by EP Yug in partnership with the Bulgarian Society for Protection of Birds (BSPB) and is financed by LIFE programme of the European Union. It covers the territory of the wetlands around Burgas - Atanasovsko Lake, Burgas Lake (Vaya), Mandra-Poda Complex and Pomorie Lake, which are located on one of the two main migratory routes of birds in Europe - “Via Pontica” and are part of NATURA 2000 network in Bulgaria. Mandra – Poda locality is a unique place where on a territory of only 1 sq. m. more than 315 species of birds can be observed.
EP Yug continues to cooperate closely with non-governmental environmental and state organizations for environmental protection, helping to implement activities on their projects.
In addition, the company also implements its annual initiative for securing stork nests by lifting on metal platforms, as from 2009 until now, more than 3200 storks platforms have been installed in South-East Bulgaria.
